The Gruen Watch Company
The History of the Gruen Watch Company
by Paul Schliesser
Every watch collector knows the name Gruen. Whether it’s pocket watches and the Pentagon or wrist watch fans with the Curvex and Quadron. Dietrich Gruen set the bar very high for American Watchmakers and we’re enjoying the results today. Identifying Gruen models can be difficult due to the loss of all Company records previous to 1958. That leaves a huge space in available research material from the company itself, but a few hard working individuals have stepped in to fill the gaps. The Gruen Collectors Forum is the first place you should point your browser since it’s members are probably the most knowledgeable on the subject. Cary Hurt is a name you’ll see anywhere Gruen is mentioned and the Owner and Admin Mike Barnett has gone further than most and produced a stunning illustrated Model identification guide. It can be ordered directly from the website.
This was my first of many Gruen’s and the quest for more continues.
